Seed Library

What is a Seed Library?
In simple terms a seed library is where gardeners “borrow” seeds from the library for planting in spring and then “return” harvested seeds back to the library in the fall. Patrons are encouraged to take up to two packets.

Where do the seed come from?
They come from companies like BBB seeds who generously give us donations. They also come from returned seeds from patrons who borrowed seeds earlier in the year. They could also come as donations from patrons who just had excess or a passion from growing. Since most of our seeds are expired packets from commercial vendors or harvested from someone’s backyard, be sure to plant a few extra seeds as germination (sprouting) might be reduced and you may get some unexpected plants.

Can I Donate Seeds?
Yes! We accept all unopened packets of commercially produced seeds from anyone. We’ll also accept homegrown seeds that have been labeled. Please bring any seeds to donate to the Adult Services desk on the second floor.

When is the Seed Library available?
All year long, however we stop stocking the seed mid to late summer when the growing season is over.

How do I get seeds?
Patrons can view the seed library near the Acme Lab on the second floor of the Library.

Why a Seed Library?
A seed library makes it easier to learn how to garden if it is your first time ever trying it. It encourages experimentation for trying to grow new plants you may have never thought to try before. It’s a great way to meet other people who are passionate about gardening and brings our community together. Finally, it encourages the growth of native plants which aids climate resilience, biodiversity, and supports our native pollinators.

New Herbarium

Come check out the City’s new herbarium, which contains a curated collection of preserved native plant specimens collected by City of Louisville certified ecologists in our very own open space.  The display will be located in the Library breezeway and is a partnership between Louisville Library and Louisville Open Space staff. Learn about the plants and flowers that are native to our area and visit our Seed Library upstairs to take home some seeds of your own to plant at home.  Whether you're a seasoned botanist or a curious nature lover, our herbarium offers something for everyone.
